INSTRUCTION
PROJECT
Task 1 : Project Proposal
Week 1 - 3 : Generating idea & Proposal finalization
on the first week we were got in our first lecture which mr mohd introduced us about intercultural design. at the end of our lesson about the basic of intercultutarl design. Mr mohd told us to create a group of 6 and make a proposal for our final project with theme “everyday design”, to observe and analyze any design that has been integrated in our daily life, for instance, road signs or food. as my group has been create we were group number 39 under Mr max as our supervisor. we were given several topics for us to decide on what to work on our final project, such as :
- Health and Wellbeing
- Mobility and Transport
- Resilience and sustainability
- Safety and security
- Economy and society
- Food culture
after discussing idea for our final assigment we chose our main idea which we've like the most was the all in one navigation app which designed for international student and so for the locals as well who are just moved to a new city and confused with directing when around the places they want to go.
Task Requirements:
Digital submission in PDF (a powerpoint presentation of the proposal) contains:
- 200 word defining and interpreting the theme in relation to the chosen elements
- Citation is necessary as evidence to the research
- A minimum of 3 preliminary ideas in detailed sketches, each with individual rationale.
- Visual references
- Reference list
Group members: (Group 39)
- Grasia cindy saputra / 0384546
- Kresensia dahayu beata amara dwinta / 0385158
- Jumaina ahmed / 0390488
- Danielle iman binti mohd reza / 0381966
- Taraneh amiri / 0382141
- Emilie annasha rania / 0387978
Each member was responsible for one section and we compiled everything into a shared document. From there we developed several ideas :
- All in one navigation app ( navigation app for international students and locals)
- Projected path zebra crossing system ( a projected zebra crossing system for pedestrians and new comers)
- Student transit card (a sustainable card to give access to trasnportation)
- Homesick package (a package that fill with personalized items from the students home country to make them easier feel like home in other countries when moving abroad)
After receiving feedback from mr max we refined our direction and decided to proceed with the navigation app, the zebra crossing system, and more developed concept of the newbie survival student kit. Due to chinese new year there were no physical classes in week 3, our lecturers said we need to start for the field study which gave us to do it since we dont have physical class. We split into pairs to develop each proposal. i worked with amara on the newbie survival student kit. we carefully refined the concept based on the previous discussion and ensured that the slides aligned visually and conceptually. after finalizing 27 slides we recorded our presentation parts individually.
Task 1 Proposal
Feedback:
- we had a online consultation with mr max, based on his feedback we have to develop more with the idea 4 which is a homesick package into a student kit.
Reflection:
during these three weeks i started to better at understand on what is intercultural design meaning and how it does connect to our daily lives. at first when forming a group wqs a bit overwhelming because im afraid they will not contribute much. but later on as we disscused more it became easier to share our opinion and build on each other's ideas.
Task 2 : Data Collection
Week 4 & 5 : Field study
in week 4 and 5 our lecturer told us to do field study. our supervisor which was mr max instructed us to collect real life evidence from specific urban locations to strengthen our ideas. after my group discuss we decided to split up by each location, there are KLCC, pasar seni(chinatown), bukit bintang, and bangsar. i was grouped with amara and we were assigned to take documentation in bukit bintang.
the checklist such as:
- Visual documentation : zebra crossing, lighting, signage, worn off paint
- Tactile observations: road texture, chipped off kerbs, uneven surfaces
- Behavioural observations: hesitation, fear, rushing, informal, crossing
- short interviews
- cultural context (local vs nonlocal, comparison, through research and through interviews - statistics, etc)
This was especially relevant for our zebra crossing system as bukit bintang is a hight density urban area frequently visited by tourists and international students. after collecting the visual documentation we gradually updated our slides by integrating real photographs and observations into our rationale. this helped make our data collection more realistic and context based rather than purely theoretical.
Task 2 Data Collection
Feedback:
- mr max told us to choose one area to be our main focused and develop more from that area
Reflection:
during this week we only focused on field study which we're collecting data from a real documentation and surveys. being busy in bukit bintang area make me realize how people were actually interract with their surrounding. i noticed things like faded zebra cross color, uneven pavements, and people's behaviour when crossing the road , collected real documentation also helped us improve our slides. this experience taught me how important is to observe real life situations when designing.
Task 3 : Final project
Week 6 & 7 : Final Project & Presentation
In week 6 and 7 we started to discuss the visual outcome from the chosen idea from our task 2. Mr Max said we have to start our final task which is task 3 and we decided to focus on petaling street for our main idea. as we split up task i tried to make a few sketches that based or symbolized such as petaling street it self. since petaling street located in chinatown in KL , i made a litte research about petaling street and i found out that petaling street roof covered by a "Green Dragon". so that i trie incorporating that "Green Dragon" into our theme. im thinking that when the pedestrians walk through the zebra cross , the smoke that came out from the dragon's nose will lead the pedestrians till the end of each side the zebra cross.
First sketch :
as our first idea which is we will projected the "Batik malaysia" as the main image for the zebra cross and i thought of i can mix the idea 1 and 2 into a one idea, so that from the dragon's smoke will lead the pedestrians into each side then there will be some flower pattern from batik malaysia to make it more unique.
Third sketch :
this is the complete rough sketch from sketch 2
Fourth sketch :
then after discussing , emilie came up with another idea which is a inverted dragon with a blooming flower , so because of that i tried to make another sketch from the dragon that i make from sketch 1 and mixed a blooming flower like emilie said.
Fifth sketch ( final ) :
after i send all of the sketches ive made we decided to choose this design to be our main image that will be projected on the zebra cross. this sketch was exactly the same like emilie resources just that i trace them again with a green dragon a more less flower.
danielle work on the other sketch which is the lighting area, what it looked like and how it will be placed. she came up with 3 initial sketch and shared into our group so that we can discuss which sketch will be used. and also we asked about mr max opinion about it then he said either sketch number 1 and 3 are compatible for us to do. after receiving mr max feedback we start to brainstorm on how to produced the final illustration.
Final illustration :
Feedback :
- Mr max told us that we dont have to design a whole complete product instead a clear illustration from our idea. he gave us idea how to make a different cultural illustration depend on its based area.
Reflection :
during this week we started to produced our final project based on the ideas we have collected. our group decided to focus on petaling street which is located in chinatown KL, we wanted our design to reflect its cultural identity. i worked on developing several sketches that has been inspired by that area. while thinking some ideas i found out that petaling street has symbol itself which is the roof that called "Green Dragon" which gave me an idea to incorporate a green dragon into our zebra crossing design. i imagined the drahon's smoke leading the pedestrians across the road so that making the crossing mre functional and visually meaningful. i tried to combined the idea with malaysian batik pattern into the design to make it more unique and culturally rich. through this process we were be able to combined each ideas into one final design. overall this experience taught me about how important it is to experiment with bunch of ideas and open into a feedback. it also showed me how collaboration is can improve a concept as everyone's helped for the final outcome into something stronger and more meaningful.
